State High School Tournaments Bring Dollars to Saint Paul
(SAINT PAUL, MN) If last year is any indication, the Minnesota State High School League tournaments underway in Saint Paul bring important dollars to the city.
According to data released by the Saint Paul Convention and Visitors Bureau today, total spending by the athletes, their families and anyone attending the tournaments held last year was more than $6 million.
"Without a doubt, the state high school tournaments bring a lot of families, fans and athletes to downtown Saint Paul," said Julie Larson, vice president of sales at the Saint Paul Convention and Visitors Bureau. "This is important business for our restaurants, attractions and hotels."
Last season, the five tournaments held in St. Paul RiverCentre, Xcel Energy Center and Roy Wilkins Auditorium had a total combined attendance of just more than 213,000. Boys hockey had the greatest number attending with more than 109,792, followed by boys wrestling at almost 59,710, girls volleyball at about 20,903, girls dance team at almost 16,850 and girls gymnastics at just over 5,945.
It is estimated that students spent about $24.00 per session visit, including tickets, parking fees, concessions and miscellaneous shopping. Adults, on average, spent about $39.00 per person per session visit.
"This season appears as though it will be as successful for Saint Paul as was 2004," Larson said. "Saint Paul is ready to welcome the athletes and fans."
The Saint Paul Convention and Visitors Bureau, established in 1929, markets the greater Saint Paul area to out-of-town visitors, advocates for visitor needs and links our community with visitors.
