A Prairie Home Companion Movie is a Home-Grown Saint Paul Product
(Saint Paul, MN) Saint Paulites are bursting with pride this week as the film A Prairie Home Companion hits theaters across the country this weekend. The film is a fictional account of the last broadcast of a radio show, and is based on Garrison Kiellor's nationally broadcast radio show, A Prairie Home Companion.

Since A Prairie Home Companion is actually broadcast in front of a live audience from Saint Paul's Fitzgerald Theater, most of the movie was shot at the theater, which is located on 7th & Exchange streets downtown Saint Paul. The film also includes scenes from nearby Mickey's Diner, a 24-hour art deco diner which still serves up eggs, pancakes and an amazing concoction called Potatoes O'Brian, seven days a week.

The movie is directed by veteran Robert Altman and features a blockbuster cast starring Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Lindsay Lohan, Kevin Kline, John C. Riley, Tommy Lee Jones, Virginia Madsen, Woody Harrelson and Garrison Keillor, as himself.

The film was shot in the summer of 2005 and nearly all the cast members turned out for the world premier in Saint Paul last month. The city threw a parade to honor the celebrity guests and the streets were packed as the stars rode in horse drawn carriages from The Saint Paul Hotel to the Fitzgerald Theater for the premier.

"It was an amazing experience to have such high caliber actors together in Saint Paul at one time," said Brad Toll, vice president of marketing for the Saint Paul RiverCentre Convention and Visitors Authority. "They all made the same comment - that they could not believe how friendly Saint Paulites were, and that they thoroughly enjoyed filming the movie here. It's certainly a testament to the welcoming atmosphere all visitors experience when they come to Saint Paul."
