Saint Paul Celebrates the Science Museum's Centennial with Diggin' Dinos
Saint Paul, Minn.—(February 28, 2007)— The Science Museum of Minnesota celebrates its Centennial in 2007 with Diggin'Dinos, an event of prehistoric proportions the entire family will enjoy. Visitors to Saint Paul will be stomping through the streets this summer to see 100 artist-designed dinosaur statues that will be lining the streets of the city to celebrate the Science Museum of Minnesota's 100th Anniversary. Eighty dinosaurs will be placed along the streets and sidewalks of Saint Paul and 20 more will perk up the parks in Minneapolis from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Much like the five-year Peanuts campaign, the tribute to Saint Paul native Charles M. Schulz which drew nearly 3.5 million visitors, the Diggin' Dinos summer celebration will include 100 statues that will be painted by local artists and sponsored by area businesses. In mid-May, an artists' paint-off will be held at the city's RiverCentre complex, as dinosaurs are transformed from 100 blank canvases to 100 creatively designed works of art. The Diggin' Dinos will hit the streets on May 28 and will be on display through Labor Day weekend. At the end of the summer-long event, some statues will be auctioned off to the public.
The Science Museum of Minnesota is considered one of the top three science museums in the United States, showcasing hands-on exhibits, including the popular dinosaur exhibit, remarkable omni-screen films and educational programs. Drawing more than a million visitors each year, it is one of Saint Paul's most popular destinations—second only to the Xcel Energy Center, which attracts an estimated 1.69 million visitors annually.
In addition to the Diggin' Dinos promotion, Saint Paul offers outstanding museums, theaters, parks and recreational facilities and a full calendar of free outdoor festivals, ethnic celebrations, musical concerts, riverfront activities and sporting events.
